During this visit to Riverside Dental Practice, we will focus specifically on your dental emergency and do all we can to solve your problem. Whether that problem is a loose crown, a tooth ache, or some other emergency, our dentists will deal immediately with the primary complaint to ensure your speedy recovery.
A full medical history is taken initially, followed by radiographs (x-rays) where necessary. Our dentists will use this appointment time to listen to your concerns and your aims for the dental treatments, and will address any questions or apprehensions you might have. A treatment plan will be provided, together with any helpful tips the dentists might have for maintaining your optimum oral health and smile.
At the heart of successfully restoring any healthy smile is the health of the underlying structure: the gums and the bone surrounding the teeth. During hygiene visits, the dentist will take the time to clean the entire surface of each tooth. This will give the gums the chance to recover their health when combined with regular home cleaning. A hygiene visit will be tailored to a patient’s specific needs, and can range from a simple scale and polish to a more detailed course of treatment provided under local anaesthetic. At every visit, advice on how to maintain the new vibrant smile will be provided and any questions will be answered. Recent studies have shown a definite link between gum disease and heart disease: another reason to smile following this successful treatment.
Much has been published about this increasingly popular treatment. There are many products on the market which claim to restore the tooth’s natural, vibrant whiteness. Whereas in-house ‘lasers’ have boasted immediate results, recent research has shown these in-surgery lamps to be little more than gimmicks, providing the patient with an uncontrolled amount of bleaching and sensitivity. Neither the dentist nor the patient can predict the outcome of this treatment. Here at Riverside, we use the latest range of take-home bleaching kits that can be controlled to restore a natural, fresh smile in a predictable, tried and tested manner. We will only prescribe this treatment for patients when we are confident that it will work well, and the dentists will fully examine your teeth to assess your suitability for this treatment.
Veneers consist of very thin (as thin as 0.5mm) films of porcelain, bonded to the outside of the teeth to restore their colour and shape. This is an especially valuable treatment for gapped or chipped teeth when a patient has become self-conscious about their smile.
In some cases, when a tooth has been badly damaged by decay or trauma, there may not be enough healthy tooth structure left to retain a filling or a veneer. Crowns are excellent treatments for restoring the appearance and function of teeth in these circumstances. They consist of layers of aesthetic porcelain bonded to a gold or reinforced porcelain substructure, which then fits precisely over the reshaped tooth and is bonded in place using a tooth-coloured resin.
In cases where a tooth has been lost and a gap remains, a porcelain bridge can sometimes be placed in order to restore the aesthetics and function of the missing tooth. Like crowns, bridges consist of aesthetic porcelain bonded to a gold or reinforced porcelain substructure, the difference being that a bridge requires the reshaping of the tooth beside the space to be restored. In the case of a resin-bonded bridge, this reshaping is quite minimal compared to the conventional bridge where the teeth are more extensively reshaped to improve strength and retention. At Riverside, we will advise you on the best combination of treatments, tailoring the design to the individual requirements of the patient.
At Riverside Dental Practice, over 95% of the restorations placed are tooth-coloured composites (white fillings). We have taken full advantage of the giant strides being made by dental researchers and use only the very latest technology and materials. Layering shades for aesthetic restorations at the front of the mouth restores the luminous translucencies evident in nature, whereas packable, high-strength restorations at the back of the mouth give the longevity required to resist the pressures of comfortable chewing. Dr. O’Boyle has a particular interest in this field and will be very happy to answer any questions you may have.
In cases where the interior of a tooth has been badly damaged by decay or trauma, it is not possible to proceed with restoring the tooth to its former strength without first laying the solid foundations inside the tooth. A root treatment can sometimes be an essential part of a treatment plan to avoid the loss of a tooth and the gap that would result. Root treatments consist of replacing the damaged cells inside the tooth, which can lead to infection, with a sterile rubber solution. This seals the tooth against further infection and allows us to use this tooth in the restoration of a smile without the worry of infection. Patients can relax and watch the on-screen entertainment system while the dentists take their time with the minutiae of the procedure, using the latest innovations in root treatment placement to ensure the retention of an important tooth.
Dentures consist of a removable prosthesis, which restores the appearance and some of the functions of a single tooth or multiple teeth. In some cases it is possible to use a metal framework under the denture to improve its retention and strength. In many cases a denture can restore a patient’s confidence in their smile and can help them face the public again following the loss of some teeth.
One of the problems being presented to dentists more and more often is the appearance of cracked and fractured teeth. Patients can sometimes also complain of headaches and jaw pain. In many cases this has been found to be related to a habit whereby the teeth are brought into contact at night with such force that they are damaging the opposite teeth and their supporting structures. This can also place undue stress on the muscles and joints involved. A lot of these problems can be relieved by the wearing of a suitable night-time appliance over the top of the teeth. This is not required in every case, and the dentists at Riverside have a wealth of experience dealing with this increasingly common problem. There are many other local measures the patient can take prior to deciding to have a fitting for a night guard, and our dentists will go through these with you at the time of your appointment.
Patients can be nervous at the thought of a visit to the dentist for a variety of reasons. At Riverside, we are keenly aware of this fact at each and every appointment and take great care to have every treatment carried out in a relaxed and calm environment. At the first appointment, patients are encouraged to talk about their concerns so that we can best manage the appointments to allow you to have the treatment you desire. Our aim will be to restore your confidence as well as your smile. You are free to bring in movies or music that you would like to have played during your treatment. We have had many patients as young as four years old actually fall asleep in the dental chair, such was the extent to which they found they could relax during their treatment.
